Donald Trump Jr. has arrived in Greenland, weeks after his father expressed an interest in the U.S. taking control of the autonomous Danish territory. Ahead of his visit, Trump Jr. described the trip as a "personal day-trip" and confirmed there were no meetings scheduled with government officials.

This comes after President-elect Donald Trump reignited a debate he had previously sparked when he stated that the "ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity" for the United States. In response, Greenland's prime minister declared, "We are not for sale."

When asked whether military or economic pressure could be considered in regard to Greenland, Trump acknowledged that it was something he could not rule out. Despite Greenland's autonomy, which allows for substantial self-government, the island's economy relies heavily on subsidies from Denmark, and it remains part of the Danish Kingdom.

During his first term, Donald Trump expressed an interest in purchasing Greenland, but the proposal was rejected, as it has been now.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen addressed Trump Jr.'s visit by emphasizing that "Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders" and that only they could determine their own future. She reaffirmed that "Greenland is not for sale" while stressing the importance of maintaining a strong relationship with the U.S., a close NATO ally.

The prime minister of Greenland had been scheduled to meet King Frederik in Copenhagen, but the meeting was postponed due to scheduling conflicts.

Trump Jr.'s visit has sparked frustration among some Danish opposition politicians. Conservative MP Rasmus Jarlov expressed his dismay on social media, criticizing the U.S. president-elect's behavior as disrespectful to loyal allies.

Upon arriving in Nuuk, Trump Jr. received a warm reception, with his father posting about it on Truth Social, saying the reception was great. One of his posts featured photos of Trump Jr. standing alongside individuals wearing "Make America Great Again" hats, with Trump emphasizing that Greenland "and the Free World, need safety, security, strength, and peace!"

Before his departure aboard his father's private jet, Trump Jr. clarified on his podcast "Triggered" that he was not planning to buy Greenland, although he expressed his admiration for the island. Trump Jr. played a prominent role in his father's 2024 election campaign, often appearing at rallies and media events.

In another social media post, President-elect Trump shared a video in which a Greenlander encouraged him to purchase Greenland and free it from Danish "colonization." The individual’s identity remained unclear, but reports suggested that he had a past criminal conviction.

Strategically, Greenland holds significant importance for the U.S., sitting on the shortest route between North America and Europe and housing a large American space facility. Following Trump’s renewed interest in buying the island, Denmark announced a significant increase in defense spending for Greenland.

Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen noted the "irony of fate" in the timing of the announcement.

Recently, King Frederik X made a symbolic gesture by changing the royal coat of arms to highlight Greenland and the Faroe Islands more prominently. While some interpreted this as a rebuttal to Trump, it could also stir controversy with Greenland's separatist movement.

In his New Year’s address, the king declared that the Kingdom of Denmark remained united "all the way to Greenland." However, Greenland’s prime minister used his own address to call for the island’s liberation from "the shackles of colonialism."

This is not the first time a U.S. president has suggested purchasing Greenland. The idea dates back to the 1860s when President Andrew Johnson first proposed it. In recent weeks, President Trump has also threatened to reclaim control of the Panama Canal, accusing Panama of overcharging for access. In response, Panama’s president affirmed that every part of the canal and its surrounding area belongs to his nation.
