President Donald Trump has appointed Erika Kirk, the widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, to the Board of Visitors at the United States Air Force Academy. She will take over the role previously held by her late husband.

The Board of Visitors is a 16-member panel that advises the Secretary of Defense on potential improvements at the academy. Its responsibilities include reviewing the institution’s morale, financial condition, and academic performance, and submitting an annual report with recommendations.

Several lawmakers also serve on the board, including Markwayne Mullin — Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Homeland Security — along with Tommy Tuberville, Kevin Cramer, Ted Budd, and John Hickenlooper.

Erika Kirk’s appointment was not formally announced by the board, though her name has recently appeared on the official list of members. When asked about the timing of her selection, the White House did not provide details but expressed strong support for the decision.

White House spokesperson Olivia Wales said that Charlie Kirk had served the board with pride, motivating future service members while also influencing millions through his outspoken Christian beliefs, commitment to truth, and patriotism. She added that Erika Kirk will continue his legacy and advocate strongly for the U.S. Air Force.

Officials at the Air Force Academy did not immediately respond to requests for clarification regarding when her appointment was finalized.

Rep. August Pfluger, who chairs the board, said Erika Kirk is well suited to continue her husband’s work and support the academy’s mission. He noted that he had recommended her for the position several months earlier and said he looks forward to working with her to carry on Charlie Kirk’s influence.

During the early months of his second term, Trump named several allies — including conservative media figures — to advisory boards at U.S. military academies.

Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, joined the Air Force Academy’s Board of Visitors in March 2025. He attended one meeting in August before being assassinated on Sept. 10 at Utah Valley University.

While serving on the board, he highlighted delays in the renovation of the academy’s chapel and urged the institution to reinforce lessons about what distinguishes the United States, emphasizing the importance of teaching cadets about the country’s values and global leadership.

At age 31, Charlie Kirk was widely admired by the Trump administration and became known for promoting conservative ideas on college campuses nationwide through Turning Point USA. Following his death, Erika Kirk stepped in as CEO of the organization.
