On Tuesday, President-elect Trump proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, while expressing concerns about Mexico's trade and immigration practices. Trump emphasized that the name change is fitting and urged Mexico to control the influx of people entering the U.S.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) responded to Trump’s announcement by stating she would introduce legislation to officially rename the Gulf.

“President Trump’s second term is off to a GREAT start,” she wrote on the social platform X. “I’ll be introducing legislation ASAP to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to its rightful name, the Gulf of America!”

Trump's comments came as he criticized the U.S.'s substantial trade deficits with Mexico and Canada. He has been vocal about these issues since winning the November election and has pledged to implement significant tariffs on both countries.

In recent months, outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo have engaged in discussions with Trump regarding his tariff threats.

Trump described Mexico as a “very dangerous place” dominated by cartels and suggested that Canada should consider merging with the U.S. following Trudeau’s resignation announcement on Monday.

The Gulf of Mexico, spanning over half a million square miles, has been charted on European maps since the 1500s.
